Effects of Storage on Wine After Packing

Bottled Wine Transport – Quality Assurance

Marcelo Papo (Concha y Toro) is not satisfied with how his wine is transported: "Our bottles are put in cases vertically. If you put the bottles vertically and you get 30 - 35'C in the container during shipment, the corks can be pushed out. It is difficult to change the bottle orientation and often cases may be left vertical for 2 - 12 months which is a problem if you are using corks. Wines under cork should be stored horizontally, especially in summer. If you use screw caps however it does not matter if the bottles are shipped vertically or horizontally in their cases. This of course does not take into account which type of closure might be "best" for the wine."
