Practical & Economic Implications of Planting or Re-Planting Vineyards

Nursery stock

Jeff Pomo, Central Coast Dir of Vineyard Operations, Constellation Brands – Pinnacles Ranch in Monterey Co, choose to replant with “uber” vines which are $6 per plant compared with $3 for traditional. Uber vines are 1 year older than standard nursery stock. Benefits are that the vines are taller and get to the wire 1 year earlier and will produce fruit a year sooner. Also they don’t need cartons to protect as they are taller than the herbicide sprayer when they are planted. Negatives (besides double the cost) is increased labor to plant.
